Podcasts no longer have RSS feeds that simply link back to an mp3 file that you directly download. Any podcast that is running canned ads (not ad reads that the host reads) is using what’s called Dynamic Ad Injection. This requires the podcaster to supply their distribution vendor with a key file that marks break points in the podcast that the system will use to slice the raw podcast file into parts, and then inject X number of ads into the break, and then reform the mp3 file for delivery. I imagine this can be done dynamically or as part of an automation that cranks out thousands of variations of the podcast file.
The reason this information is important is because it means that the PODCAST FEED itself is betraying you and your data. The feed is controlled by an ad delivery network, which works in partnership with the podcast, to inject dynamic ads based on demographic information the ad delivery network has, and they use metadata about your connection (such as IP address) to match you against a shadow portfolio of your data, or at least a pool of data that hits your demographic.
Now, one other thing here that is betraying you, is your flatmates. It doesn’t matter how much you protect yourself, because you are likely connected to your wifi, along with the other flatmates, and they’re likely not taking the same measures as you are to ensure anonymity online. So you could have received that ad not because of data collected about you, but because of data collected about everyone who uses your ISP-provided address to connect to the internet, even if they’re not listening to this specific podcast.
A VPN can mitigate most of that, as well as using a FOSS Podcast reader like you are. But if you have to listen to the podcast through Spotify, it’s still moot because the IP addresses you get via the VPN will become attached to your data profile from Spotify, which will then find its way back into the existing data on you which includes your apartment’s IP address.
The reality is Podcasts are big businesses and all the feeds for all the popular podcasts are owned by ad networks that collect data on listeners and then pair that data up with other data they collect from data brokers.
Spotify has podcasts, but I don’t use it for that, so when I read “analyzes the RSS feeds I subscribe to” I imagine they’re talking about through Spotify since that is the root of the conversation.
If you use Spotify as your podcast app, a VPN isn’t going to protect you. You should look for a FOSS Podcast app, especially if you subscribe to most of your podcasts via RSS.
Then the VPN layer would kick in, allowing you to download them anonymously.

Every other major social media platform is in bed with the Feds, giving them access to whatever they wish at a moment’s notice. The “threat” to the nation isn’t foreign influence it’s domestic influence. If they can’t have backend access to the system to monitor these domestic threats, then the whole system is a threat. If you are using TikTok as a means of ORGANIZING then you are a THREAT to the NATIONAL SECURITY because the Feds can’t WATCH YOU LIKE A HAWK.
At one point, TikTok reportedly altered language that would have allowed government officials to demand changes to the apps recommendations algorithm if it promoted content the agencies disagreed with.

It’s funny, when you explain it, my IT hat goes on and I totally get it lol. I guess the context felt different enough that I didn’t get it. But I work with Windows domains all day and that’s exactly how DNS operates in that environment.
Ultimately I think for a tunnel you’ll end up with your records pointing to your VPS. So you’ll have a *.domain.tld CNAME record and maybe a @ CNAME record and your nginx server on the other end of the tunnel would handle the routing.

I saw this and I think it’s what I’m going to do too. I figure I can just configure it with my existing nginx information and go from there.
So here is a question: does it need to be a sub domain? Can’t I redirect all traffic to the VPS? If I wanted to host a HTML website at my root domain and have it served by nginx for example, couldn’t I do that?
I just see subdomain mentioned in the guides / tools I see but I don’t understand why exactly.

Even in the United States after the revolution they implemented authoritarian measures to ensure the security of their revolution. They sized the land of Loyalists and effectively drove them out if the country. They killed Loyalists, who were their fellow colonists, for their opposition to the revolution. They attempted tirelessly for peaceful transition to independence but the Monarchy refused them and ignored them until they were left with no choice but to begin violent armed revolution. All revolutions are authoritarian in their nature. The American revolutionaries were seizing their power by force and imposing their self actualized authority over the colonies in pursuit of their own economic and social freedoms.
The United States is authoritarian and many of the same ways that socialist states are authoritarian. If you don’t believe me, look at the history of the socialist movement in America. Look at what the state was and still is willing to do to its own citizens for criticizing and organizing against the capitalist and imperialist system that the state runs on.
Are you here to tell me that McCarthyism and the red scare were democratic in their execution? That they were in line with the Free Speech and Free Expression ethos the United States projects? They were not times of political democratic freedom. Even in recent times you have leaders of movements critical of the state being killed for their political positions. Students killed during the anti-war movement in the 60s and 70s. Anti-War activists driven out of their employment and careers over their opposition to the state and it’s actions in Vietnam.
So what do you call authoritarianism under capitalism then? Democracy??

You know how people keep talking about the Nazi Bar? Now say, you’ve been keeping your bar Nazi free for a while, and then, a massive venue opens up across the street that is way more inclined to cater to Nazis because they’re huge and don’t dedicate the resources in dealing with them. They reach out to all the bars in the area to and want to partner up by offering venue attendees one free drink at your bar. You can take that offer, and your volume of bar patrons goes way up even on slow days, but it will ruin the vibe for your regulars and you’ll have to accept that it’ll be a lot harder to keep Nazis out of your bar.
I think there is an assumption that is rooted in how reddit worked, that votes are anonymous. People operating under that assumption might not like having that blanket ripped off. It would be different if it was up front from the start.
