Any low power device is going to struggle with video playback unless you’re doing direct streaming. The exception being the new Intel N line of processors that have capable enough GPUs to do the transcoding. If all you’re after is decent transcoding performance for H264/H265 video, anything newer than Intel’s 7-8th gen CPUs will do the job. $100-$200 used optiplexes and thinkcentres can easily handle this type of workload.

Can you be more specific about your performance objectives? The Pi5 can handle jellyfin and nextcloud relatively well, so if you’re having issues with them, identifying the bottlenecks can help narrow down the hardware recommendations.
Not emby related but for audiobooks, it doesn’t get better than audiobookshelf.
I think kickassduke42 and I have been using the same source of info. It’s all thanks to mrrobvs at the other site and started with this post. Prior to that, I had always used various resellers at 2x-5x of what I’m paying now.
I’m surprised that group hasn’t been taken down yet. Maybe we could find a way to post reviews of the various services, something that doesn’t clutter up the community and makes it easy to search for relevant info.
So what exactly are the rules here about discussing various providers and sources. I’m not a reseller (have no intention of becoming one) but I do have useful info to share. Would be nice to have a dedicated lemmy community that is safe from the usual takedowns & spam.
Yes. The first number didn’t work so I refunded it but it worked on the 2nd try.
I’ve used smspool.net a few times without issue.
That listing is for a Sandy/Ivy bridge processor from 2011. I would really recommend something newer than Skylake at the minimum. For reference:
Something to also keep in mind is the codec support of the GPU for hardware decoding and transcoding if that’s important to you. The Optiplexes will mostly be fine in this regard but if you see yourself needing AV1 support anytime soon, Intel’s N line is an efficient and relatively cheap option. Getting HDR tone mapping working at the hardware level might also be something to look out for.
Mainly to avoid using YouTube and the mess of that interface. All i need is a chronoligical feed of the channels I like. I’m not overly concerned that they can associate my IP with some viewing activity. As long as there are multiple people in the household using YouTube, it’s not a given they know who’s watching what. Also it’s much easier to have multiple invidious profiles and use them with Firefox containers than it is to have multiple YouTube accounts and switch between them.
https://docs.invidious.io/youtube-errors-explained
Running a remote instance without some sort of IP rotation became infeasible. I’ve been running it locally since google started actively trying to kill invidious. The only reason that still works is because they want to avoid collateral damage that could affect other people in the household.

Unfortunately, this is going to be a bit of a journey. You’ll probably end up going through a few of these options until you find one that works for you and fits your workflow.
We literally have wireshark and similar utilities available to all of us to inspect every packet of data coming in to and leaving our phones. You can install pcapdroid right now to see exactly what facebook is doing and where that data is going. This is not complicated stuff.
Now imagine the payday and notoriety that’ll go to the security research firm that is doing this kind of work on a regular basis and is able to definitively prove it’s happening. Why do you think that hasn’t happened yet?
Or how about not assuming either way and waiting for proof before believing narratives. Anything else occupies the same space as conspiracy theories.
The math on anyone always listening to everyone’s phones doesn’t add up and will not any time in the near future.
Unfortunately I don’t think AMD (& Nvidia) care about GPU gaming market share when they’ll be selling all the MI accelerators they can make using the same wafers at much higher profit margins.
As consumers, we’re going to have to get used to getting mediocre offerings at inflated prices until the AI hype dies down or they find a way to use some of the other manufacturing nodes to make competitive GPUs.
I like what the Arc division has been doing lately, especially with Linux support. I am looking forward to what battlemage can bring to the table.
We’ll have to wait ~ 2 years since the next round of AMD cards are rumoured to be midrange cards. The Steves are right that if A.I is still as profitable for both AMD and Nvidia by then, expect prices to go up for any flagship. It wouldn’t make any business sense not to.

None of your listed use cases will even come close to taxing the 6600k. It’s going to probably sit happily in idle states most of the time.
Proxmox also has great snapshotting and backup features. Makes it easier to mess around with your containers/VMs without worrying too much.
