I really didn’t understand his argument. How do LLMs replace a networked operating environment and all its APIs? There has to be some application protocol to communicate between the two systems. Is he really just arguing for open standards?

No one understands it because it makes no sense. Because he’s lying. They remove it so you have to pay for their proprietary services, just like GM.

This is highly appealing to automakers, of course, because it gives them more control over the customer experience, which every automaker with a marketing budget (that’s all of them) is finding more and more opportunities to exploit, whether via subscriptions, integrated e-commerce, or straight-up ads

no no, every car has its own standards, interfaces and api. Everytime you connect your phone, it will use an LLM to figure this out and map it to your phone.

/s Thank goodness all APIs are perfectly documented so a slopbot can figure it out (every time), and build a ui on the fly, and not brick everything. 🙄

Yeah, it’s just another way of saying they’re building their own proprietary system (likely with a paid subscription) that has all the same things under the hood, but with an AI front end that is controlled by voice commands. GM is already doing that (the proprietary system part). My Subaru’s basic functions like A/C can already be controlled by voice command. This is just extending it to entertainment and navigation controls with AI bullshit on top.

Redundant? Yeah, maybe. So what? Do you need to save space on your infotainment partition?

With options, users develop -gasp- preferences. That would encourage competition and good UI practices. Heck, maybe keep ads to a minimum.

Rivian, go ahead and build something better. Make drivers/passengers WANT to use your app.

Exactly this! If it’s better than CarPlay, I will use it. If it’s worse, I want to be able to use CarPlay. I’m old enough to understand that car infotainment systems do not keep getting updated and quickly fade into obscurity. I won’t buy a vehicle without CarPlay as I know it will keep working for a pretty long amount of time.

      build something better

But why would they do that when they can just shut out the competition entirely?

      Is capitalism great again?

Thanks, in my cursory interaction with Rivian, I’d only had positive impressions. It’s nice to now have the clarity to know that the disease of enshitification is alive and well in their hallways like the rest.

Thank you for dismissing any early goodwill I had for your company, chief software officer.

I was excited for the R2 and R3, but they went full-touchscreen like Tesla. I’m just not interested in going backwards in UI.

Then why do car manufacturers keep selling your driving history to insurance companies and advertisers?

Somehow the old guard boring car vehicle brands, not GM - maybe not any American brand, are becoming desire brands/models. At worst, never sign up for a car subscription and teach the younger ones that haven’t experienced a car phone mount. They’re better today than in the past. Instead of finagling with clips, they have magnets

Must be a coincidence. Everytime I mounted my phone it would get a fucked up reading on maps. My pixel doesnt have the issue but my samsung from years ago did.

Coincidence. Your phone has multiple magnets in it already.

My Pixel’s case has some pretty strong magsafe-compatible magnets. No issues in almost two years.

I drive a Rivian, it’s perfectly nice, mine is an R1T lease you’d have to be stupid to buy an EV right now with how fast they’re changing and while it’s nice in the sense that it’s quick and handles well it’s got serious issues with the GPS/infotainment it tracks you literally 24/7 and you cannot turn it off, there’s so many people on line talking about it and Rivian fanboys shouting them down about how they must be trying to cheating on their partners, like nah I just don’t consent to Rivian tracking me it’s really not that deep. The R1T has basically zero accessible interior storage and lots of things that should be buttons are hidden in a screen menu. I need a truck I live in the country and haul stuff in the bed on a very regular basis and I want an EV for very obvious reasons but the 24/7 tracking alone is a reason I likely won’t be getting a gen 2 R1T when my lease is up much less all the shitty software
