The Trump administration is closing NASA’s largest research library on Friday, a facility that houses tens of thousands of books, documents and journals — many of them not digitized or available anywhere else.

Jacob Richmond, a NASA spokesman, said the agency would review the library holdings over the next 60 days and some material would be stored in a government warehouse while the rest would be tossed away.

“This process is an established method that is used by federal agencies to properly dispose of federally owned property,” Mr. Richmond said.

Do US citizens not have a sense of the damage and loss of knowledge and recall the German Nazi’s burning of books? I think I know the answer and it is too maddening.

Only Elites care about boring old stuff that already happened? All that matters is what lies ahead, and there is no way of predicting that from past history.

I think technically correct, but history is littered with similar scenarios that are consistent and can provide many suggestions as to what we can expect next. There is nothing to indicate that things will be different this time.

It was the first thing that came to my mind when I heard about this news.

I guarantee you most of our citizens don’t read the NY Times and are too poorly educated to understand the potential consequences of this.

@tedesche@lemmy.world sad and upsetting to think this. The cost of retaining the items is likely less than the cost of structured destruction.

Trump and his administration aren’t doing this out of some rational thought process; this is purely to hurt people he considers his enemies. Our people voted into office a pathological narcissist, a whining, conniving, conning baby of a man, a man who should have remained an unsuccessful joke. Those who voted for him and regret it now deserve their suffering. It’s just so unfortunate that so many other people, who never wanted to give this man power, have to suffer along with them.

I just hope that when his term is over, Trump’s MAGA cult will disintegrate and American politics will return to some semblance of sanity (as sane as any political system can called, at least). I, for one, will never forgive the idiots and evil people who voted for him—including the radical Christian lunatics in my own family.
